The EPIC-1 course
EPIC-1 is a blended-learning programme for residents who are new to intensive care medicine. It is designed to give candidates the essential knowledge required to make the first stage of ICU training safer, clearer and more structured.

Get familiar with the Intensive Care Unit.
EPIC-1 opens the door to intensive care practice by demystifying organ support as a whole.
With unfamiliar equipment, procedures, monitoring and emergency protocols, the intensive care unit can feel very detached from regular medical practice. EPIC-1 removes the initial barriers and enables residents to gain ICU experience without the initial "backward step" that many who are new to intensive care experience.
What candidates can expect
Relevant, focused and high-quality teaching that zooms in on the concepts that make the ICU different from elsewhere. The course was built with one question in mind - as intensivists, what do we wish he had been taught before we started out in the ICU?
Who it is for
This is an introductory course, aimed at those with less than 6 months of exposure to ICU. It assumes no prior experience, and can be attended both by candidates who are and are not on an anaesthetic training program.
Core concepts
Modern adult learning techniques have been woven into a comprehensive course covering a wide variety of concepts. On the face-to-face day, expect a full, exhaustive day of learning.
General course structure
Create an online account and access learning materials
When your place on the course is confirmed, you'll be sent an email inviting you to create an account on the learning system. After signup, you'll complete a pre-course evaluation which will create a profile of your current level of experience and confidence. You'll then be able to access the online learning materials, which you can absorb at your own pace.
Attend the face-to-face day
Locally-run courses may vary in structure according to venue and timing constraints. In general, however, the EPIC-1 course follows a simple structure:
Lectures covering general ICU organisational concepts, airway management and tracheostomies
Small-group clinical teaching workshops using a variety of teaching methods and based around a realistic case
Simulator sessions bringing the content of the course together
Detailed feedback and certification
You'll then complete feedback which uses similar questions to the pre-course evaluation, and give feedback on the teaching sessions. Once complete, you'll quickly receive your certificate of attendance.
